Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), also known as e-waste, refers to waste originating from equipment that relies on electric current or electromagnetic fields for operation. The increasing generation of this waste, and the risk of environmental contamination posed by its constituent materials, represent current challenges that require the attention of government, institutions and the general population. For this reason, with the aim of providing more information about WEEE management in the city of Recife-PE, this research carried out an assessment of the current context of waste management in the city, in order to identify possible improvements, analyzing the types of waste collected, the functioning of companies, and potential sustainable destinations. In this context, six main companies responsible for managing this waste in the municipality were identified, offering collection services and voluntary drop-off points throughout Recife in partnership with other entities. The improvement proposals include strengthening reverse logistics by increasing collection points in strategic locations and encouraging technological innovation, in addition to implementing environmental education programs in both schools and communities.Furthermore, the creation of a municipal portal on WEEE and the development of public-private partnerships are essential for improving the management of this waste. Despite some initiatives, Recife still lags behind other cities, such as São Paulo-SP and Fernandes Pinheiro-PR, in terms of the legal framework and WEEE management practices, highlighting the need for greater public involvement and transparency in data dissemination. After the study, it was possible to affirm that it is necessary to expand investments in WEEE management, increase public-private partnerships, and promote public awareness throughenvironmental education.

Solid waste improperly disposed of on beaches poses risks to health and to the entire marine ecosystem. The objective of this work was to analyze and compare the solid residues found on the beaches of Maria Farinha and Casa Caiada in Pernambuco, evaluating the number of residues, observing possible associations with living beings and identifying the most likely sources. In 2019, three collections were made at each beach, in Maria Farinha, on November 25, at 8:49 am, December 13 and 26, at 10:42 am and 10:30 am respectively; and Casa Caiada, on November 27, at 10:46 am, December 14 and 27, at 11:20 am and 10:46 am, respectively. For the collection, a transect 1 m wide by 10 m long, whose center was the line-of-cue (maximum level of the high tide), was arranged in three points of the beaches, with a distance of 100 m between them. The collected items were quantified, weighed and measured. They were classified according to the composition: plastic, metal, paper, glass and organic, observed using a stereomicroscope to identify possible associated living beings and, finally, the possible sources of the analyzed items were defined. In total 141 items were collected during the three collection days at each beach, 41 at Maria Farinha beach and 100 at Casa Caiada beach. Associations of living beings were found mainly with plastic material residues, these organisms being macroalgae (arribada), microalgae (perifiton), oysters and barnacle, found in Maria Farinha. While at Casa Caiada beach, associations were found with items of plastic and metal material, these being polychaeta and gastropod tubes, respectively. The results show that the pollution comes mainly from what is consumed and discarded by users.

Incidência de resíduos de pesca antes e durante a pandemia do COVID-19 no litoral norte de Pernambuco – Brasil

Abandoned, Lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG), described in 2009, refers to equipment such as cables, nets and traps that continue with an active catching function without any monitoring. These devices have generated growing concern, as they are responsible for causing several negative environmental impacts, such as ghost fishing, responsible for the mortality of species present on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In addition, ALDFG account for approximately 10% of marine litter. In 2019, with the start of the new Coronavirus pandemic (SARS-CoV-2), the use of beaches was prevented, interfering directly on the fishing activity. Given this scenario, the aim of this study was to analyze the influence of the social isolation on the fishing activity and the incidence of ALDFG in northern Pernambuco. As well as describing and characterizing the ALDFG found in the beach region and comparing their frequency among the analyzed beaches. The surveys were carried out in 2019 and 2020, in four beaches on the north coast of Pernambuco, one of which is located within the Acaú-Goiana Extractive Reserve. Active searches were carried out in the beach environment, by a group consisting of four people. Each pair walked the beach in the same cities, simultaneously, for an hour. The ALDFG were photographed and collected, in addition to being taken to the Fishing Oceanography Laboratory for quali-quantitative analysis. Additionally, observation per unit of effort (OPUE) and absolute and relative frequencies were calculated. Much of the collected material was grouped into bands of smaller length, weight, diameter and height, demonstrating the predominance of fragments. There was a significant decrease in the frequency of ALDFG after the period of prohibition of the use of the beaches, but the seasonal variation remained the same, indicating that the fishing activity in the north of the state was probably not completely interrupted. The cities showed a significant difference between them, probably due to differences in the use and management of space, demographic density, tourism and the presence of a fishermen community. Thus, measures are needed to promote greater awareness of the topic and prevent the formation of new ALDFG.

The extraction of shellfish on the Brazilian coast, especially on the northeastern coast, is considered traditional, where this culture permeates generations of family members. At the same time that the shellfishing activity is carried out, the shells resulting from the activity are discarded improperly, generating an environmental liability with environmental impacts in the small, medium and long term, forcing the need to implement a shellfish management plan. activity, from logistics for transporting workers, to processing the product obtained and the waste generated. The objective of this research was to survey the needs of shellfish gatherers with regard to carrying out their daily activities, with the aim of proposing the implementation and use of a basic unit of the container type to process their products, promoting good practices in hygiene and safety. The research was carried out between the months of August 2019 and February 2020, in the region of Canal de Santa Cruz, municipality of Igarassu - Pernambuco, and a bibliographical review survey focused on the problem pointed out in the research. Visits to the location, image recording and data collection were carried out with the aid of a questionnaire, where the shellfish gatherers pointed out some of their main needs during work.

The present work is related with electronics waste (EWA) treatment and disposal. The generation speed of this kind of waste, on a worldwide scale, is in the order of 20 to 25 million tons a year. This result is a concern of environmental preservation agencies. As these waste ware potentially contaminants, in large proportions, of biotic systems in soil, water and air. The case study uses the tool Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA), developed by Walter Andrew Shewart, having two distinct periods of foundation, 1931 and 1939, through his books: Economic Control of Quality of Manufactured Product, and Statistical Method from the Viewpoint of Quality Control. This tool was suggested for the referenced company in order to optimize the operationalization of treatment and disposal of the EWA. Thus enable the speed of transformation into economically and environmentally viable by-products. Although far below the generation speed of these kind of waste. In the specific case of Brazil there is the National Solid Waste Policy (NSWP) associated with the law 12.305/2010, in force. Arising from the decree 10.240/2020, the reverse logistics of electronics products becomes mandatory Nationwide with due legal protection, and with the use of the PDCA tool, implemented in the electronics waste treatment and disposal company, there is a perspective of continuous improvement. The result of optimized management and legal provisions generates the mitigation of large-scale environmental impacts. Noting that the physical and Chemical components of electronics are extremely harmful to all natural resources, therefore, it is necessary to pay careful attention to environmental public policies.
