This paper describes the activities developed in the Mandatory Supervised Internship (ESO), a mandatory discipline in the curriculum of the Veterinary Medicine course at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), with a total workload of 420 hours. The internship was initially carried out at the Pernambuco Equine Center, located in the city of Gravatá - PE, and later at the Clinical Pathology Laboratory of the Bixo's Veterinary Clinic, in the city of Jaboatão dos Guararapes - PE, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Gustavo Ferrer Carneiro, during the period from November 1, 2024 to January 21, 2025.During the internship, carried out at the Pernambuco Equine Center, it was possible to actively participate in the laboratory routine, monitoring and assisting in the performance of tests for the diagnosis of Equine Infectious Anemia and Equine Glanders. In addition, at the Clinical Pathology Laboratory, I had the opportunity to participate in several laboratory analyses, including hematological and biochemical tests, urinalysis, parasitological fecal examinations, immunochromatographic tests and dermatological cytology. In addition, I collaborated in the preparation of the respective reports at the end of the analyses, contributing to the interpretation of the results. This report also includes the presentation of an article that addresses platelet activation of platelet-rich plasma obtained and subjected to cryopreservation and lyophilization. The study was carried out at the Andrology Laboratory (ANDROLAB) of the Department of Veterinary Medicine at UFRPE, and was partially developed in collaboration with the Clinical Pathology Laboratory of Clínica Bixo’s.

Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Érika Fernanda Torres Samico Fernandes, the present work aims to report and discuss the activities developed during the Estágio Supervisionado Obrigatório (ESO), an essential subject for the completion of the Veterinary Medicine course at the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE). During the period from April 1, 2024, to April 30, 2024, the internship was carried out at the UFRPE Infectious Diseases Laboratory, with an emphasis on microbiology, infectious diseases of bacterial etiology and a special focus on the study and laboratory diagnosis of leptospirosis. The experience also made it possible to write a scientific article focused on the serological survey of Leptospira spp. in dogs (Canis familiaris) treated at the Hospital Veterinário Universitário of UFRPE, located in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. Then, from May 15, 2024, to June 28, 2024, the internship continued at the Laboratory of Inspection and Technology of Milk and Derivatives at the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA), where it was possible to experience a routine focused on physical-chemical and microbiological analysis of milk and dairy products, in addition to research activities aimed at studying mastitis in ruminants, also aiming to promote technical assistance to the dairy industries and rural producers in the State of Bahia. The course load completed in the ESO discipline made it possible to combine theory with practice, expanding learning about laboratory practices applied to infectious diseases and the inspection of dairy products of animal origin, thus strengthening academic training with an emphasis on Preventive Veterinary Medicine, a professional area of great relevance in the context of One Health.

The objective of this work was to describe the activities carried out during the mandatory supervised internship, conducted at the Veterinary Bacteriology Laboratory (LaBV) of the Federal Fluminense University (UFF). The internship took place at the Biomedical Institute of UFF, located on Alameda Barros Terra Street, in São Domingos, Niterói-RJ, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Walter Lilenbaum and guidance from Prof. Dr. Erika Fernanda Torres Samico-Fernandes, during the period from 10/2/2023, to 12/22/2023. It was possible to observe the routine activities of LaBV, conducting research on Leptospirosis, performing routine serological tests using the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) technique, and molecular biology research using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique. Additionally, I had the opportunity to observe the culture and maintenance of samples containing live Leptospira spp. Additionally, it was possible to participate in the research activities conducted in the laboratory, leading to the preparation of a scientific article aimed at detecting the presence of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies in samples from donkeys originating from two properties in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, where the Australis serogroup was the most commonly detected.

Complementary exams are important tools in clinical decision-making. With technological advances, there is an increase in diagnostic information and, consequently, the importance of the quality of the results obtained. However, for greater reliability of the tests, the period from filling out the request to delivering the sample to the laboratory, called the pre-analytical phase, deserves a lot of attention. The objective was to identify and describe the frequencies of nonconformities found during the pre-analytical phase in blood samples sent for blood count at the Laboratory of Veterinary Clinical Pathology at HOVET-UFRPE, supporting decision-making for the correction and prevention of such problems. During the months of March to May 2022, the collection of samples for blood count sent from the daily routine in the laboratory was carried out. Among the 791 samples, 317 (40.07%) had some pre-analytical error, with most cases referring to the canine species, in agreement with the hospital casuistry. Errors were grouped into three groups involving sample quality, requisition and collection tube. In the first group, the main alteration found was hemolysis, in 37.87% of the samples; followed by lipemia. In the second, we have incomplete completion of the requisitions and illegible handwriting with 34% and 15.5%, respectively, and, to a lesser extent, the absence of identification of the collection tube representing the third group. The results are below those found in the literature due to the logistics of delivery and control by the laboratory, however, they represent almost half of the total received. The computerization of the hospital system and awareness of the improvement in the pre-analytical phase are possible promising resolutions.

The Mandatory Supervised Internship (ESO) is a mandatory discipline offered in the last semester of the Veterinary Medicine course, totaling 420 hours of practical experience. ESO started on August 17, 2020 and ended on October 30, 2020, being held in two different locations: ACLIVE: Veterinary Diagnosis, Recife - PE and LABOVET: Veterinary Diagnosis, Aracaju - SE. The objective of the internship was to acquire more knowledge and improve techniques and activities related to the Veterinary Clinical Pathology area. The activities developed during the experience consisted of monitoring and assisting the routines of the laboratories, enabling the student to acquire technical, practical and theoretical knowledge to perform serological diagnosis of glanders and Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), activities developed in the blood bank, hematological analyzes , biochemical, endocrine, mycological, parasitological, among others. The course conclusion work, entitled “Transfusion Medicine in Veterinary: From donor to recipient - Literature review” is a theoretical complement to the activities related to the blood bank that were developed during the internship. Thus, the aim of this work was to report and describe the experience and activities developed in the course completion stage.

The Mandatory Supervised Internship is a discipline that aims to insert the student into the professional context in order to provide a practical experience through the application of the knowledge that was acquired along the course of studies. It is an opportunity for the student to practice techniques and to fix the concepts learned and prepare for the execution of the activities that will be carried out in the work routine. This study aims to report the ESO activities that were carried out in the LFDA-PE Animal Diagnosis Unit, which were carried out under animal diagnosis, from August 19 to November 25, 2019. The internship allowed contact with several diagnostic techniques used in the laboratory routine and also stimulated a literature review on EIA, viral infectious disease that affects equids. The EIA is a viral disease of great importance for the equids raising, which reasoned the literature review that constitutes the second part of this work.
