Intervertebral disc herniation (IVDH) is a disease of great occurrence in the small animal clinic, its development can be acute and/or progressive, and can affect different areas of the spine, from cervical to sacral. There are three types of disc herniation: Hansen type I, II and III. This paper aims to describe the physiotherapy treatment of a French Bulldog with pelvic limb paralysis due to acute disc extrusion in L3 and L4 (Hansen type I), submitted to decompressive surgery and later physiotherapy. The surgery was performed on June 26, 2023 and physiotherapy began immediately after the animal was released from hospitalization, on June 30, 2023. The entire case was followed up during the Obligatory Supervised Internship, at the Instituto de Reabilitação Animal in Curitiba - PR.

This paper aims to detail the characteristics of the different types of hernia, the diagnosis and treatment currently used. Throughout the work, a literature review was performed on the anatomy of the spine and spinal cord, as well as the pathophysiology of intervertebral disc herniation. Considered a routine procedure in veterinary clinics, treatments for this type of disease can follow two lines of treatment, conservative and surgical. With the advancement of studies in the field of alternative medicine, it has been noted the benefits that acupuncture has shown in the treatment of intervertebral disorders. A case study was then conducted in which topics were provided that provide information and illustrate the daily life of the veterinarian.
