This paper seeks to expose some historical facts that have shaped theeconomy of the state of Pernambuco. Its motivation is associated with the fact that, despite the existence of vast literature on the economic history of Pernambuco, the available works generally fall on a periodic or sectoral cut, or, when they treat in acomprehensive manner, are characterized as extensive and dense works. In turn, the present study seeks to compile the information in a document with direct and fluid language, with the intention of being used as a basis for rapid consultation by readers interested in the theme. Thus, it seeks to group information that deals with the evolution of the Pernambuco economy, bringing to the center of discussions its historical facts and discussing its consequences. To this end, relevant bibliographic references were used to discuss these characteristics, organized according to their striking phases, from the pre-discovery to the present day.
