This article proposes to highlight the discussion about the formation of the phenomenon of globalization from two opposing perspectives, which are the origin of globalization during the sixteenth century, defended by Dennis O. Flynn and Arturo Giráldez, and the argument that globalization began only in the 19th century, advocated by Kevin O'Rourke and Jeffrey Williamson. Taking Hispano-American silver and its role in Asian and global markets as a guiding principle, the article debates not only the meaning of the term globalization, but also the formative stages of this process. We try to infer the period of emergence and the importance of the flow of silver through world markets for the construction of this phenomenon during Modernity.
