    The Mandatory Supervised Internship is an essential step towards completing the Veterinary Medicine course. It is a mandatory subject in the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine curriculum at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco, with a total workload of 420 hours. To carry out the internship, it was decided to divide the workload equally between two locations: the VETS Diagnostic Laboratory and the Infectious Diseases Laboratory of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco, both located in the city of Recife/PE. This work aims to report the experiences during the Mandatory Supervised Internship, carried out under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Erika Fernanda Torres Samico Fernandes Cavalcanti and the supervision of Veterinarians Carolina Gomes Rodrigues dos Santos and André de Souza Santos. From this stage, an article was developed on the presence of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies. in blood serum samples from cats from a serum bank at a Private Clinical Pathology Laboratory in Recife/PE.

    Detecção de anticorpos anti-Leptospira spp. em asininos (Equus asinus) do estado de Pernambuco - Brasil

    The objective of this work was to describe the activities carried out during the mandatory supervised internship,conducted at the Veterinary Bacteriology Laboratory (LaBV) of the Federal Fluminense University (UFF). The internship took place at the Biomedical Institute of UFF, located on Alameda Barros Terra Street, in São Domingos, Niterói-RJ, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Walter Lilenbaum and guidance from Prof. Dr. Erika Fernanda Torres Samico-Fernandes, during the period from 10/2/2023, to 12/22/2023. It was possible to observe the routine activities of LaBV, conducting research on Leptospirosis, performing routine serological tests using the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) technique, and molecular biology research using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique. Additionally, I had the opportunity to observe the culture and maintenance of samples containing live Leptospira spp. Additionally, it was possible to participate in the research activities conducted in the laboratory, leading to the preparation of a scientific article aimed at detecting the presence of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies in samples from donkeys originating from two properties in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, where the Australis serogroup was the most commonly detected.

    Leptospirose em ruminantes e sua importância como zoonose

    The objective of this work is to carry out a review of the literature on leptospirosis in ruminants, emphasizing its epidemiological situation, its zoonotic character and its importance within the context of public health. Leptospirosis is an infectious disease, which may present an acute or chronic evolution caused by a bacterium of the genus Leptospira, having as serogroup more prevalent in Brazil the interrogans, in which it has several serovars, with capacity of infection between the animals and between the animals and humans. The main sources of infection for humans and ruminants are contact with excretions of animals that are eliminating Leptospira, be they wild, synanthropic or domestic. For human beings, the food route is worth highlighting, especially the transmission through the milk and meat of infected animals. Leptospirosis is a notifiable disease for both animals and humans and should be included within the zoonoses of sanitary and economic importance in Brazil, aiming at improving public policies aimed at improving sanitary conditions in cities and for intensifying actions in the aiming at reducing the impact on animal production and on the zoonotic nature of the disease, and it is always necessary to consider the importance of disease transmission in its urban cycle and also in its rural cycle.

    Infecção por leptospira spp. em capivaras (Hydrochoerus Hydrochaeris Linnaeus, 1766) de vida livre em Pernambuco

    Capybaras are herbivorous rodents of semiaquial habit, distributed throughout Brazilian territory, preferably inhabiting areas that have bodies of water surrounded by shrub or aquatic vegetation for food and shelter. Capybaras are hosts of a wide variety of pathogens of public health importance, including bacteria of the genus Leptospira. However, in the northeast region there is no research on the pathogens of these animals. The objective of this study was to determine the serological variants of Leptospira spp. circulating in three free - living capybara populations in the municipalities of Recife, São Lourenço da Mata and Chã Grande. For this purpose, the Microscopic Soroagglutination (SAM) technique was used, using 22 pathogenic serovars and two saprophytes. The cut-off point used was 1: 100. Of the 21 capybara studied, antiLeptospira antibodies were detected in 13 (61.9%). The prevalence of antibodies antiLeptospira interrogans serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae and anti-L borgpetersenii serovar Tarassovi was 57.1% (12/21) and 4.8% (1/21), respectively. This study was pioneer in the detection of anti-Leptospira antibodies in capybaras in the northeastern region of Brazil. The information obtained will contribute to the understanding of the role of this species in the epidemiology of animal and human leptospirosis in the state of Pernambuco.
