Item Uma análise da atuação do governador Salvador Correa de Sá(2023-09-20) Silva, Walter Lopes Bezerra da; Abril, Victor Hugo; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7978574619584394; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8643765635502507This article analyzes Governor Salvador Corrêa de Sá during the colonial period in Brazil, focusing on the Regimentos and the Cachaça Revolt that took place in Rio de Janeiro in 1660. Through this analysis, it was possible to verify that the Regimentos theoretically delineate the hierarchical superiority of governors over other colonial positions. However, upon exploring bibliographies that delve into the everyday life of Portuguese lands in America, other sources of power, these being local, can be identified. Villages and Municipalities played a role in colonial politics, signifying that although the Regimentos confirm governors as representatives of the king, in practice, we observe local powers engaging in political dialogue directly with the Portuguese monarch. Thus, it can be inferred that governors, despite having royal authorization to act as "moderating powers," local powers continued to operate within their own limitations and in constant dialogue with other spheres of power.Item Entre a fé e a heresia: o jogo dúbio do padre Manoel de Moraes preso pela Inquisição Portuguesa no século XVII(2023-04-15) Santos, Rafaela Silva dos; Abril, Victor Hugo; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7978574619584394; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0104430823138126This article proposes to highlight the life journey of the priest Manoel de Moraes through the opposite paths followed by him. In light of the analysis of his process, transcribed and located in the Magazine of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Rio de Janeiro, we seek to understand how his attitudes led him to be expelled from the Society of Jesus and to be arrested by the Portuguese Inquisition. The relevance of the inquisitorial archives is highlighted in order to gain knowledge about Moraes and the activities he carried out while he lived in Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba and the provinces of the Netherlands in the 17th century. In addition, to recognize the relevance of the inquisitorial archives to understand how the Portuguese Inquisition was structured, who were the individuals prosecuted and how they related to faith and heresy.Item Entre a monarquia e a etnia: Antônio Pessoa Arcoverde e o cargo de governador dos índios em Pernambuco (c. 1654-c. 1694)(2021-12-07) Cavalcanti, Taylor Uchôa; Abril, Victor Hugo; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7978574619584394; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6917305758393514In the second half of the 17th century, the process of Portuguese interiorization in America needed an intermediar pole of negotiation between indigenous and Portuguese cultures, in order to connect the hinterland to the center of government. Under the title of Governor of the contributions of Antônio Pessoa Arcoverde to the consolidation of Portuguese in this territory and the political-administrative mechanisms used by him to strengthen his negotiating power over the colonial authorities. Using the documental base of the Overseas Historical Archive provided by Projeto Resgate and the historiography related to the said post, an investigation will focus on the certificates made by the tabajra leader, which include the military services in the wars in Pernambuco and in the hinterlands – against blacks and opposites around enterprise – during the years 1654 to 1694. Thus, the colonial administrative structure is problematized, since Antônio Pessoa Arcoverde had privileges unavailable to a goof parto f the population due to the actions of his military company.Item Impressões rebeldes: uma análise da revolta escrava de Camamu de 1691(2023-09-20) Silva, Pedro Ivo Basílio Bandeira da; Abril, Victor Hugo; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7978574619584394; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6219896900704807This article seeks to analyze and understand the social upheavals that occurred in the village of Camamu, located in the then Captaincy of Ilhéus, during the year 1691. Camamu, a village built in front of a bay of the same name, was characterized by its significant production of cassava flour during the 17th century, as well as by the substantial number of enslaved people who inhabited the region. Being in a border region, Camamu was a frequent target of indigenous incursions and also a favorable location for the emergence of numerous quilombos. This context resulted in a local population consisting of enslaved individuals, mixed-race people, indigenous people, and white people. It was in 1691 that ethnic-racial tensions reached their zenith, deteriorating into an open rebellion of enslaved individuals and mixed-race people who chanted slogans like "Death to the whites, and long live freedom." The revolt was brutally suppressed by Portuguese authorities and was characterized as one of the largest uprisings of enslaved people in the Captaincy of Ilhéus in the 17th century.Item A quem serve a lei do rei: o comércio ilegal de pau-brasil em Pernambuco nas últimas décadas do século XVIII(2021-12-07) Barbosa, Luciana Lima de Andrade; Abril, Victor Hugo; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7978574619584394; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4624755136490721Smuggling was, and is, a constant in contemporary Brazilian society, developing a social role for each niche. But this is not a current, contemporary practice, it has been present in the country since the beginning of Portuguese colonization, and as well as today, it had its social role. Among many other smuggled products, brazilwood stands out, exploited since the moment the Portuguese arrived in this land, and proving to be a great source of profit, immediately became a target for misuse. Taking its trade as a monopoly, the Portuguese Crown tried hard to combat the misuse of Brazilwood, but it was not always successful in this fight, as shown in documents covering from 1786 to 1791 and dealing with the smuggling of Brazilwood in Pernambuco even after two centuries of Portuguese domination.Item Teoria e prática: uma análise comparativa entre a legislação ultramarina e a realidade do contrabando de tabaco em Pernambuco no século XVIII(2024-10-01) Silva, Everton Giovanni Albuquerque da; Abril, Victor Hugo; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7978574619584394; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4951193057750967Recently, the study of Portuguese America based on illegal activities has gained ground in brazilian historiography. However, despite the growing trend of historiography on illegal practices in Pernambuco during the colonial period, when it comes to tobacco smuggling, it is difficult to find works on the subject. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the smuggling of this commodity in the Captaincy of Pernambuco in order to understand how this historical phenomenon fits into the social and economic context of Portuguese America. To achieve this goal, a comparative method was used between existing legislation on tobacco trade and administration and official documents that deal with cases of smuggling and/or embezzlement, moving from a global to a regional scale to obtain new perspectives. It was observed that the creation of a rigid legal apparatus that aimed to maintain the commercial monopoly of tobacco was not enough and consequently, alternative ways of trading the commodity were propitiated: smuggling and embezzlement.Item Trajetórias político-administrativas no Império Português: Sebastião de Castro e Caldas e seu governo na capitania de Pernambuco (1707-1710)(2020-10-29) Silva, Lídia Eurídice de Noronha; Abril, Victor Hugo; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7978574619584394; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5702311547272291In this article, we propose a systematic study of Pernambuco's daily life and modes of government based on the trajectory of Sebastião de Castro e Caldas who took over the capital's government between June 1707 and November 1710. The figure of the governor is one of the main engines of the colonial administration, he is responsible for military control, defense of the territory and has all the autonomy to negotiate with the local powers. Throughout the work, the contrast between the normative documentation that guided the political-administrative activities in Portuguese America and the reality of government practice will be discussed, taking into account the search for ascension and social prestige and the defense of real interests in overseas conquests.
