With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become necessary to take a closer and more vigilant look at the situation surrounding Brazilian prisons and especially Pernambuco's prisons. Over the course of 2019 and 2024, we focused our studies on the theme of Pernambuco's prisons. Investigating the trajectories of women who have left prison and the experiences of professionals who have worked in prisons. Faced with the emergence of the crisis that was on the horizon, our research into prisons took on a new debate, and from that context we focused our studies on the impacts of COVID-19 on the prison system in Pernambuco. This paper seeks to contribute to Consumer Science studies on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Pernambuco prison system, based on an articulated analysis of production and consumer relations, which form a dynamic and complex whole that relates to and transforms itself into social, economic, political and cultural phenomena. Based on the reports, bulletins and ordinances published by the National Penitentiary Department (DEPEN) and the National Council of Justice (CNJ), we sought to analyze the impacts of COVID-19 within the Pernambuco prison system; analyze the actions taken by the state to deal with the pandemic; and analyze the impacts on prisoners. Finally, our work seeks to be a contribution to the field of consumer studies aimed at studies of the prison system and subaltern trajectories.Item Dinheiro e cárcere: uma análise sobre a economia dentro dos presídios de Pernambuco(2024-03-08) Santos, João Gabriel Nascimento dos; Cavalcanti, Moisés Freitas Athayde; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9265526085292201The aim of this work is to structure the ways in which the economy is established within prison isolation, using the Northeast region as a central geographical point. The scientific importance is largely formulated by the very environment that is being studied. The prison is not a laboratory where variables can be controlled; they are part of the living organism that is society. Analyzing a limited environment such as this one from a technical and economic perspective can reveal the market and the relationships that exist within it in a completely different way. The research used the method of discourse analysis in academic papers, articles, official reports and newspapers, focusing exclusively on the daily life of prisons in the state of Pernambuco, extracting the passages that refer to economic concepts in order to build a map of the structure. During the collection of reports, it became clear that Pernambuco's prison population is a reflection of the institutional prejudice that surrounds society. The accounts show that the modus operandi of the prison economy is exactly the same as that of the free world, since the capitalist economy is inseparable from the structure formed inside the prison, the same hierarchical power structure, where those with money always have an advantage over those without. Commerce in this environment is lively, everything is bought, everything is sold and everything is negotiated. It is necessary for public bodies to mediate power relations, to centralize or negotiate them in a way that is less harmful to those who have low incomes and cannot afford the privileges of prison.
