Culture is recognized as a fundamental right, and it is the duty of the State to guarantee the rights of access to and cultural expression for all citizens. In this context, the school stands out as a State institution and agent of cultural integration through its pedagogical and curricular practices. Thus, the present research aims to highlight the role of the state school in Pernambuco as a facilitator of access to culture and to understand how pedagogical practices assist in the debate, recognition, and occupation of cultural spaces. To this end, the research was conducted in two stages: In the first, theoretical attributions of the concept of culture were sought, addressed by Câmara Cascudo (1983), as well as cultural contexts and practices of cultural policy, with Calabre (2007), Chauí (2008), Coulangeon (2014), Jourdain (2017) and Simis (2007), in addition to pedagogical approaches and methodologies developed by Paulo Freire (1980; 1996; 2005) and Celestin Freinet (1975). In the second stage, through qualitative methodology, data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews with public education agents from the Maria Vieira Muliterno High School, located in Abreu e Lima. Based on theoretical surveys and data analysis, it was possible to understand that the school not only serves as a space for social interaction for young people but also plays a fundamental role in the production, identification, and preservation of culture. Therefore, it is concluded that the school, in addition to being a space for social interaction and academic formation, also acts as an agent of cultural integration in the lives of young people.

(2023-04-27) Bezerra, Danilo de Araújo; Tenório, Maria Cecília Marinho; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5822053911842534; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9392370997609182
Physical Education (PE) is for many students one of the main opportunities for physical activity. The general objective of this study was to analyze the participation of students from public schools in the night shift in Physical Education classes and to describe the associated factors. The specific objectives were to verify the prevalence of participation of evening students in Physical Education classes and describe the demographic and health factors associated with their participation. The consulted literature included databases such as Scielo, Pubmed, and Google Scholar, as well as thesis papers. To collect the data, the National School Health Survey (PeNSE), developed by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in 2015, was used. The cross-sectional study presented relevant results on the participation of evening students in Physical Education classes, contributing to the debate on the quality of physical education in schools. 1,208 evening students participated in the survey, with the proportion of male students (52.2%) being higher than that of female students (47.8%). The vast majority are over 17 years old (69.1%), identified as "pardos" (44.0%), and the largest proportion of students are from the southeast region, with approximately 29.5%. Regarding maternal education, 47.1% did not complete primary education. Half of the students (50.8%) worked while most attended high school (95.3%). It was observed that 64% of the sample reported participating in Physical Education classes, while 44.2% did not have classes. Regarding class time, 84% of students had only one class per week. Regarding self-perceived health, the majority (65.8%) rated it as very good or good. Regarding nutritional status, 73% of students were eutrophic, and 95.9% believed that physical activity is beneficial. However, regarding the total time of physical activity, more than half of the sample (72,6%) did not reach the minimum recommendation of 300 minutes or more. Regarding screen time, the majority (55%) reported spending up to 120 minutes per day, while for sitting time, 58.7% reported sitting for up to 120 minutes. Among eating habits, 62.9% of students reported eating fruits and 62.2% reported eating vegetables. The results indicated that students who reported good overall health and practiced physical activity outside of school were more likely to regularly participate in school physical activities.

(2021-12-16) Cavalcanti, Matheus Henrique Magalhães; Bezerra, Gabriella Maria Lima; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8954499933466652; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7430908424391567
This paper analyzes some results of the implementation of the New Public Management (NGP) in basic education in the state of Pernambuco in the period 2007-2018. For this, we chose to carry out an analysis that adopted, especially, quantitative data collection and analysis techniques. The procedures were divided into two stages, the first was a literature review and the second was the analysis of secondary data. We built a timeline containing the main institutional initiatives aligned with NGP, from the AlepeLegis portal, to assess the adhesion of public managers to this type of management. In addition, we also built and analyzed the indicators of the state system of basic education from the School Census Synopsis, made available by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (INEP) to identify the influence of management on the indicators. Thus, we realize that the institutional framework, created by a technical elite of state managers aligned with the NGP, influenced the quantitative improvement of educational indicators. However, when we deepened the analysis of indicators referring to teachers, we realized that, contrary to previous results, the impact of NGP on teacher indexes, when compared to Brazilian numbers, did not show positive results.

This research aims to comprehend the school occupations occurred in 2016 against Temer government and its austerity politics that affected several sectors, including education, from the perspective of the students at Reference High-school Ginásio Pernambucano, located in Recife. The research attended the development of the students’ mobilizations to carry out the occupation until the period after the evacuation, highlighting the occupations consequences to the school routine as well the political formation impact to the young people involved in these acts. Based on semi-structured interviews applied to students and people unrelated to the school that participated in the occupations, it was created a chronology's occupation focused on the guidelines raised by the movement at the beginning and on guidelines that were incorporated throughout the occupation. This work also discusses how the relationship between students, teachers and managers took place, along with how the students have structured the occupation, the instances of decision on the organization of activities and actions. Finally, we understand that occupations go beyond the schedule of political combat and create a new perspective of school with student self-management, where there is intense learning about citizenship, political participation and an inclusive perspective of school management, showing how this experience of students was full of contradictions and learning in an intense 33 days as occupants and administrators of the school.

The Brazilian Public School Math Olympics (Olimpíada Brasileira de Matemática das Escolas Públicas, or OBMEP) is a competition that has held yearly since 2005, with the goal of identifying talented students and to improve basic education. In this paper we use longitudinal data to evaluate the OBMEP’S impact on the amount of hours that students report to have dedicated to studying, how often they have been absent from class, and how often they answer their mathematics homework. We use a difference in differences approach combined with propensity score analysis, the results shows that proximity to a participant in OBMEP’s later phase causes a statistically significant increase on the amount of hours students dedicate to study and on how often they answer their homeworks, it also shows a decrease in how often students are absent from class.
