Recently, the study of Portuguese America based on illegal activities has gained ground in brazilian historiography. However, despite the growing trend of historiography on illegal practices in Pernambuco during the colonial period, when it comes to tobacco smuggling, it is difficult to find works on the subject. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the smuggling of this commodity in the Captaincy of Pernambuco in order to understand how this historical phenomenon fits into the social and economic context of Portuguese America. To achieve this goal, a comparative method was used between existing legislation on tobacco trade and administration and official documents that deal with cases of smuggling and/or embezzlement, moving from a global to a regional scale to obtain new perspectives. It was observed that the creation of a rigid legal apparatus that aimed to maintain the commercial monopoly of tobacco was not enough and consequently, alternative ways of trading the commodity were propitiated: smuggling and embezzlement.

This work aims to analyze the conflicts surrounding the political and economic situation of the captaincy of Itamaracá in the 17th century, the loss of its autonomy, and consequently, its annexation to the captaincy of Pernambuco. We will depict the model of remote administration promoted by the grantees, in addition to analyzing the structures of social and power relations within the captaincy. To do so, we will discuss local powers and how administrative positions within the grant were distributed, addressing their functions and obligations within the captaincy and duties towards the Crown. In addition, we will expose the revenues of the captaincy of Itamaracá and the interest that the captaincy of Pernambuco had in them. We will make reference to the uprising of Goiana as one of the most illustrative conflicts regarding political groups and their disputes of interests, especially after the Dutch invasion in the region, which led to the incorporation of the captaincy of Itamaracá by the Crown. Finally, we will attempt to explain how Itamaracá endured in the possession of the grantees for so long, even amid a period of successive incorporations into the Crown, while also presenting the reasons established by historians that seek to explain the failure of this captaincy.

(2024-02-28) Meireles, Douglas Rafael Kettner; Almeida, Suely Creusa Cordeiro de; Oliveira, Luanna Maria Ventura dos Santos; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4568221860409469; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5060116886139677; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9827801024333288
The present work aims to analyze the correspondence sent from the captaincy of Pernambuco to Portugal, between the years 1644 and 1654, as contained in the Overseas Historical Archive (OHA), accessed through the Baron of Rio Branco Rescue Project, coinciding with the final moments of what is known as “Dutch Brazil”. Although these documents were addressed to the Portuguese monarch, they entered the court through the desks of the Overseas Council: an organ created in 1642 that received the majority of demands from various places within the Portuguese overseas empire. By observing the global and local historical context of the production of these documents, namely the Iberian Union (1580-1640), the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), and Dutch Brazil (1630-1654), as well as the formation and early years of the Portuguese Overseas Council, it is possible to better understand the correspondence in question, with its senders and subjects, within the context of war.

(2021-03-04) Lima, Gidiana Andrade Barbosa de; Lopes, Gustavo Acioli; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4871749798523527; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9921671020901867
The religious brotherhoods were welfare institutions that had to promote collective devotion through the spiritual and material support of their associate brothers in Portuguese America. In this sense, in this work, we propose a study on the Brotherhood of São Pedro dos Clérigos in Vila of Recife during the period from 1713 to 1765. In this proposal, we analyze this institution from the royal and ecclesiastical codes in accordance with the internal statute and the activities carried out by the Brotherhood, seeking to identify as power relations to which it was inserted. For that, the Commitment of the brotherhood of São Pedro dos Clérigos was used, as Ordinations Philippines, as First Constitutions of the Archbishopric of Bahia and a request made by the Brotherhood to the overseas council where they stand out as administrative practices of the Brotherhood.

In this article, we propose a systematic study of Pernambuco's daily life and modes of government based on the trajectory of Sebastião de Castro e Caldas who took over the capital's government between June 1707 and November 1710. The figure of the governor is one of the main engines of the colonial administration, he is responsible for military control, defense of the territory and has all the autonomy to negotiate with the local powers. Throughout the work, the contrast between the normative documentation that guided the political-administrative activities in Portuguese America and the reality of government practice will be discussed, taking into account the search for ascension and social prestige and the defense of real interests in overseas conquests.
