Item A Voz do Silêncio: mangá no processo de ensino-aprendizagem da língua brasileira de sinais(2023-09-11) Carvalho, Thecia Karolina Souza de; Alves, Bruno Fernandes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8297422717781216; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4895746996790379The sign languages and comics share similar features, the visual experience is one of the most important, and it is also one of the cultural artifacts of deaf culture. In this regard, this study is an action research project whose aim is to demonstrate how the manga A Silent Voice (2020) can be used in the teaching-learning process of the Brazilian Sign Language (LBS) in a 4th grade class in the municipal district of Paulista-PE. Firstly, for our theoretical foundation, we seek to trace the roots of Western comics, emphasizing their relation to education, as well as the main features of manga. Then, we gave an overview of deaf education and the elements that constitute the language, as well as the importance of bilingual education and the use of comics in the teaching and learning of deaf and listeners. Through a questionnaire and interview, the students and the 4th grade teacher participated in the research, in order to answer the specific objectives: to investigate the students' previous knowledges about comics and the teacher's conception of their use in school; to discover the teacher's and students' experiences with the language; to identify the presence of the subject in the different spaces of the school; to analyze students' comic strips, taking into account the aspects discussed in the didactic sequence applied. We used content analysis to define four categories that relate to the results, also using aspects of semiotic analysis. The results indicate that school is a favorable environment for the dissemination of deaf culture and the manga contributed to the development of sign language knowledge.Item Comparação de algoritmos de reconhecimento de gestos aplicados à sinais estáticos de Libras(2019-07-12) Cruz, Lisandra Sousa da; Cordeiro, Filipe Rolim; Macário Filho, Valmir; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4346898674852080; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4807739914511076; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2111589326272463Brazilian Sign Language (BSL) has been created in order to cope with a necessity of a non-verbal communication for the deafs, which during a long time were indoctrinated to learn the Brazilian Portuguese as their first language. Nowadays, the BSL is the Brazil’s second official language and first deaf’s language, as well as the Portuguese for the listener. Nevertheless, even with large recognition, the Brazil’s second official language is not known by the majority of the Brazilian population. The inclusion process aims to allow equality for the impaired, such that the deficiency does not become an impediment factor for living together in society. With the technology arrival and the Artificial Inteligence (AI) advances, it was created technologic artifices to allow inclusion. In the AI, the pattern recognition is one of more approached subthemes in the present, and it is widely applied for the gesture classification of many sign languages in literature. This research has, as key task, the identification of the hands that form a certain BSL gesture and, thus, the recognition of the class it belongs to. Based on American Sign Language (ASL) classification, the Feature Fusion-based Convolutional Neural Network (FFCNN), an extended network from Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), obtained the best accuracy in comparison to other networks, such as Visual Geometry Group (VGG). Therefore, based on this scenario, this work applies the FFCNN to BSL static gestures to verify whether the FFCNN obtain the best accuracy as well as obtained in ASL or not. In order to achieve the goal, this work compares three classifiers: the Visual Geometry Group (VGG), a CNN with variation of 13 and 16 layers, the FFCNN, and a Multi Layer Perceptron network used in recognition of BSL static gestures in literature. The algorithms were applied in a BSL dataset with 9,600 images of 40 signals. The results demonstrate that VGG with 16 layers obtained the best accuracy regarding the described models in this work, corresponding to 99,45%.Item Instrumento de facilitação da aprendizagem de terminologias específicas da Anatomia Humana para alunos surdos no Ensino Superior(2020-11-04) Carlos, Allane Cosmo da Silva; Palma, Mariza Brandão; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5056572269695104; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5599265225671037The Brazilian sign language - LIBRAS is the natural language used by communities of deaf people in Brazil. Libras is considered the 2nd official language of Brazil and as the different natural languages it is composed of morphology, phonology, syntax and semantics. Deaf students when they are inserted in the classroom present some difficulties in the teaching and learning process due to the predominance of the oral language and the absence of signs in some areas of teaching, mainly in science teaching. Human Anatomy is a descriptive science that studies the structures and shapes of the human body. According to the definition of Dangelo and Fattini, Anatomy is the discipline that studies macro and microscopically, the constitution and development of organized beings. The teaching and learning process of this discipline is considered complex due to the number of anatomical terms that are used to describe the human body. Based on the observations made by the deaf student who is inserted in the Human Anatomy classroom of the first period of Licenciatura in Physical Education at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco UFRPE, it was revealed the difficulties that the student faces when faced with the specific terminologies of the Anatomy. From this systematic observation, the work in question aimed to create signs in the Brazilian sign language - LIBRAS, which help in the teaching of Human Anatomy and in understanding the specific terminologies of the discipline. The signs were created and improved together with the deaf student targeted by the observations and the Libras interpreter who accompanies him. Temporary signs were created in order to support the teaching of Human Anatomy for deaf students and serve as a basis for further studies that can fully support the specific signs of the different contents of Human Anatomy. Proponemos algunas actividades que, al nuestro ver, ayudarían al estudiante sordo a asimilar mejor el portugués como L2.Item A libras promove a inclusão das docentes surdas no ambiente de trabalho da UFRPE?(2019) Lima, Tereza Cristina Alves; Sampaio, Maria Janaína Alencar; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1968884119513703The aim of this study was to investigate how the communication of deaf professors who teach Libras (Brazilian sign language) occurs in the main campus of UFRPE, thus, to identify if the universitiyprovides the necessary and sufficient measures to facilitate this communication during work related activities, contributing to the full effectiveness of these professors’ inclusion in the academic environment. The methodology applied is linked to the qualitative method in the form of a case study. The data collection was obtained from quizzes answered by students, staff and hearing professors, as well as through interviews with deaf professors and a professional translator and interpreter, whose role is essential for the sign language communication totake place. The theory for researchwas based on the historyof deafness and sign language, as well as the paradigm of inclusion (from its former protectionist exclusion until nowadays), where social practices aim to establish equality and everyone must be recognised as citizens of equal importance. Issues related to accessibility, prejudice, stereotypes and stigma were addressed, culminating with the understanding of the importance of work as an essential element for the inclusion process. The data analysis pointed that, despite UFRPE establishing some more generalised and some more specific accessibility measures to aid the communication through Libras, they are still of little reach and effectiveness to enable the full interaction and integration of the deaf professors in this academic institution.
