Water scarcity not only limits economic growth but also negatively impacts public health and exacerbates social inequalities. In this context, the implementation of sustainable water resource management strategies, such as the construction of underground dams and the adoption of agricultural practices adapted to local climatic conditions, becomes essential to promote sustainable socioeconomic development in these regions. Underground dams, in particular, stand out as a water resource management tool and as an alternative, low-cost technology for construction and maintenance, being a hydro-environmental work that aims to meet water demands for human, animal, and agricultural consumption, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. They interrupt the flow of surface and groundwater through an impermeable wall built transversally to the direction of the water flow. Rainwater infiltrates slowly, forming or raising the water table, which will later be used by plants. In the face of the challenges imposed by prolonged drought and the economic vulnerability of rural communities, the importance of intensifying rainwater harvesting and storage becomes evident, not only as a measure to mitigate crop losses but also as a mechanism to significantly increase the income of rural communities and promote sustainable economic development in the region. Strengthening these practices, combined with public policies aimed at the Brazilian Semi-arid region, can transform the reality of the region, making it more resilient to climatic adversities, promoting water security, and contributing to the reduction of regional inequalities. In this sense, the main objective of this work is to review the literature on the role of underground dams in promoting water sustainability and regional development in the Brazilian Semi-arid region, covering the advances, limitations, and opportunities of this technology in the context of water resource management.Item Benefícios e desafios das feiras agroecológicas de Recife - PE: uma análise da comercialização local(2024-10-01) Silva, Gleyce Kelly de França; Ribeiro, Maria Norma; Rocha, Laura Leandro da; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7226123934022759; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3643578234373660; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8532351925608551Item Do campo ao ensino: uma relação entre a agricultura familiar e a aquisição de alimentos pelas escolas públicas de Paudalho - PE(2024-03-07) Maciel, Ana Clara Santos; Souza, Poema Isis Andrade de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2017359154121135The discussion of how the countryside permeates the city so that there exists a sustainable relationship between these two realities is a too approached topic, in such a way that the recognition that it is necessary to strengthen this relationship is even present in laws. The goal of this work is twofold. First, it is to analyze, throughout secondary data and interviews, the Federal Law L11947 applied to the district of Paudalho, where one of the prerequisites for the city to receive the requested resource is that its schools use at least 30% of such funding in family-farming-food-made. The second objective is to discuss the importance of this law for the relationship between the countryside and the municipality, understanding whether it can promote the circular economy and healthy eating in schools in the municipality. Secondary data analysis is based on reading research articles, collecting IBGE socioeconomic numbers, and information collected through interviews with staff of the Paudalho Education Department. From this analysis and discussion, it is concluded that the Federal Law L11947 is a remarkable incentive for the circular economy of the region, but there still exist many difficulties to overcome, such as, for instance, the low value of available federal resources capable of covering students meals without district's resources.Item Uma análise histórica da mulher na agricultura familiar e sua relevância para preservação da biodiversidade genética e ecológica(2024-03-05) Silva, Jenifer Carla Borges da; Freitas, Nara Suzy Aguiar de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6891650997818766; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0352343973672028Family farming, essential for food security and sustained by ancestral practices, is marked by the fundamental role of women in the conservation of genetic diversity and the cultivation of traditional varieties. These varieties are vital for the resilience of ecosystems against environmental challenges, but are threatened by modern agriculture and genetic erosion. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the female contribution to family farming and its impact on biodiversity conservation. Using a meta-analysis methodology, the research examines 60 scientific publications, including articles, dissertations, theses, and final papers, to identify trends and gaps in knowledge. Approximately 80% of the studies analyzed include specific information about gender, with 18% focusing specifically on women, reflecting the national reality of female participation in agriculture. Correlation analyses and chi-square tests were applied to investigate the relationship between gender and the use of agrochemicals and organic practices, finding no statistically significant associations. Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) was employed to explore the relationships between seed varieties, methods of acquisition, and geographical locations of farming families in Brazil. The results reveal systemic barriers faced by female farmers, such as limited access to financial resources and agricultural credit. The study also highlights seed selection based on immediate characteristics, the cultural importance of seeds, and the need for supportive policies for family farming. A crucial aspect is the ongoing genetic segregation of Creole seeds, which allows them to adapt to environmental changes and resistance to pests and diseases, although it may result in inconsistencies in production. The artificial selection of Creole seeds by farmers can lead to the loss of valuable genes, underscoring the urgency of expanding the presence of specialized technicians. Family farming in Brazil is revealed in a complex manner, influenced by historical, cultural, and environmental factors.Item Sustentabilidade de um agroecossistema com barragem subterrânea no território do médio sertão alagoano(2024-02-28) Lima, Luara Gabriella Gomes de; Freire, Maria Betânia Galvão dos Santos; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2636653493262436; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4105079582957608The Brazilian semiarid region, located in the Caatinga Biome, is considered one of the most vulnerable to climatic variations due to irregular rainfall, water deficiency, and poverty among the population. As a result, current public policy programs have been investing in social water technologies for rainwater harvesting and storage to help rural families overcome the challenges posed by water scarcity. The technology of underground dams has been the subject of various research projects conducted by Embrapa and its partners, as it provides access and multiple uses of rainwater for farming families in the region. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in implementing underground dams in the rural agroecosystems of the Brazilian Semiarid, leading to the establishment of many units. Since the 1980s, research on this technology has played a crucial role in exchanging experiences and knowledge among farmers, development agents, and researchers, particularly regarding technical construction aspects, soil and water management, and suitable crop options. However, studies on the impacts of this technology on the agroecosystem and the lives of farming families are still in their early stages. Considering this, the present study aimed to conduct a case study evaluating the contribution of underground dams to the sustainability of an agroecosystem located in the Middle Sertão Alagoano Territory. The study was conducted as part of the ZonBarragem Project by Embrapa Solos UEP Recife. Soil samples were collected for morphological, granulometric, and chemical characterization of the area where the underground dam was planted. Participatory Rural Diagnosis (DRP) tools, such as semi-structured interviews, participant observation, construction of maps of natural resources on the property, and sustainability assessment charts, were used for sustainability evaluation. The results clearly showed that the underground dam, along with other rainwater harvesting technologies, is contributing to the improvement of the family's quality of life and the resilience of their agroecosystem to climatic adversities.Item ATER agroecológica para a agricultura familiar no semiárido: do enfrentamento da fome, à abundância promovida pelos sistemas agroflorestais nos municípios de Buíque, Exu e Triunfo em Pernambuco(2024-02-04) Silva, Raul Brainer; Figueiredo, Marcos Antonio Bezerra; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4886000173439874I present my academic and professional career in this memorial in an autobiographical approach, where many of the reflections were obtained through experience in different territories, in the daily lives of farmers in different locations in the Semiarid region. The aforementioned document is specific to my understanding and learning in themes related to Education in Agroecology with rural participatory processes, given the knowledge acquired in the Bachelor of Agroecology Peasantry and Popular Education (BACEP) and the experience of “Sertaneja Culture” in the surrounding territory. from PARNA-Vale do Catimbau, Serra do Araripe and Sertão do Pajeú, through Sítio Alcobaça, Association of Farmers and Farmers of Serra dos Paus Dóias (AGRODÓIA) and the Agroecological Development Center (SABIÁ) in the semi-arid region of Pernambuco. Relating Agroecological Scientific Knowledge to the ancestral knowledge of traditional native communities, we highlight here the importance of different integrated cultivation and breeding systems, with low environmental impact arrangements. Presenting the experiences of Mandatory Supervised Internships (ESO's), based on the management practices, implementation and processing of what is produced in Agroforestry Systems (SAF's), bringing SAF as a strategy for generating income, combating climate change and part of the solution to confront the issue of hunger in the Northeast Sertanejo, portrayed in Josué de Castro's work “Geografia da Fome”, published in 1964 and still current in terms of the developmental problems that threatened food security in the semi-arid region.Item Memórias e vivências agroecológicas: práticas de buscar o bem viver(2024-03-07) Cadete, Micael Lucas; Aguiar, Maria Virgínia de Almeida; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4665749527709728The objective of this work is to show my academic journey and in the field of Agroecology, highlighting my training and the directions I intend to follow after completing my Bachelor's degree in Agroecology at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco. The starting point was the creation of a timeline, where I narrated my story and addressed relevant aspects about my family and the context of the family agroecosystem. This environment was crucial as a research field for the activities and studies proposed by the course. From this base, I deepened my reflections on topics such as animal and plant integration, education and rural extension, in which I developed a growing affinity throughout my studies and practices. Throughout the text, I established connections between these themes, demonstrating the importance and relevance of each approach in my personal and professional trajectory. This journey of self-knowledge and reflection has been fundamental to my educational process, because by recognizing and valuing my experiences, I am building a solid foundation for my future development in the field of Agroecology. This foundation is essential not only for my academic training, but also for my work as a professional committed to sustainability and sustainable rural development.
