The calving period is a critical time for cows, characterized by high energy demands and negative energy balance, which increases susceptibility to metabolic disorders such as hyperketonemia and hypocalcemia, negatively affecting animal health and immunity. This study investigated the relationship between chemerin protein expression and various metabolic biomarkers at calving, considering the hypothesis that chemerin could serve as a substitute or auxiliary marker for existing biomarkers due to its role in metabolic and inflammatory processes. Blood and placental tissue samples were collected from 14 pregnant cows, subjected to clinical examinations and collection of blood and placental tissue. Biochemical and hormonal parameters were analyzed from blood samples, while chemerin gene expression was evaluated from placental tissue samples. The results showed a moderate negative correlation between chemerin expression and serum sodium concentration (r=-0.60; p=0.0241), suggesting a possible regulatory role of chemerin in electrolyte balance during calving. Additionally, significant positive correlations were found between the energy biomarkers BHB and NEFA, and between the protein profile biomarkers total protein and globulin, reflecting the metabolic state during the peripartum period. However, no significant direct correlations were observed between chemerin expression and most of the other metabolic biomarkers studied. It is concluded that chemerin expression in placental tissue may have a regulatory role in electrolyte balance, but its influence on other aspects of the metabolic profile is limited and requires further investigation. Future research should focus on elucidating the mechanisms by which chemerin may influence metabolism and homeostasis during calving.

The objective of this study was to determine, through the multivariate analysis, which, among the environmental, physiological and behavioral parameters, influence milk production and quality of lactating cows. This study was developed with data from a collection carried out in 2009. Sixteen lactating Girolando cows were selected. The animals were divided into four treatments of 0, 10, 20 and 30 minutes on a cooling system. The statistical analysis used was the multivariate, using the technique of Principal Component Analysis on the environmental, physiological and behavioral parameters have influence on milk production and quality. The rumination was opposite to the production, indicating that it was smaller, because it presents a condition of possible stress. The CCS was strongly influenced by the TR and in turn the FR. Both TR and FR presented the highest values in time of 0 minutes indicating a condition of thermal stress, which reflected in accentuated values of CCS, reducing milk quality. The use of 10,20 and 30 min cow exposure times to the evaporative adiabatic cooling system provided significant changes in somatic cell counts.

The Compulsory Supervised Internship (ESO) enables the student to acquire practical knowledge from experience with tutors and owners of animals that is not only learned in theory; providing the critical sense and the ability to analyze situations encountered throughout the profession rationally. This report presents the activities of the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (HOVET - UFRPE) located in Recife-PE. In the area of Medical and Surgical Clinic of Small Animals and also in the Clinic of Cattle (CBG) of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE) located in Garanhuns-PE, in the area of Medical and Surgical Clinic of Ruminants and Equines. The first stage followed clinical, surgical, preoperative and postoperative evaluations of the patients, in addition to the surgical procedures; and in the second stage medical, surgical and large animal laboratory. The report describes a case of relapse of left abomasum displacement, which is a recurring problem in dairy farming and causes great loss to the farmer by the sudden drop in milk production, that leads to animal death but with early diagnose and treatment, mainly with surgical correction, the prognosis is very favorable, as seen in the reported case.
