This research aims to investigate the relationship between military police, mental health, and drug use, from a sociological perspective on the psychological suffering experienced by uniformed officers in Brazil. It starts from the understanding that the mental illness of military police officers cannot be explained solely by individual or circumstantial factors, but must be analyzed in light of the social, institutional, and symbolic structures that shape police subjectivity. The research engages with the historical formation of the Brazilian Military Police as an apparatus for controlling the internal enemy, with the construction of a hegemonic masculinity based on virility, emotional control, and the denial of vulnerability, and with the effects of the militarization of public security and the war on drugs. Based on a literature review anchored in authors from sociology, gender theory, and public health, this study discusses how psychological suffering is produced and managed institutionally, as well as the ways in which the use of psychoactive substances emerges as an informal strategy for emotional regulation in the absence of effective care policies. It understands that drug use among police officers is not an isolated deviation, but a symptom of structural contradictions that permeate the police institution and Brazilian society. Finally, the work points to the need to rethink mental health policies within the context of public security, shifting the focus from the individual to the social and institutional conditions that produce illness.
