The Mandatory Supervised Internship was conducted under the guidance of Professor Dr. Andrea Alice da Fonseca Oliveira. The activities took place in the pathology department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science at São Paulo State University (UNESP), Campus Botucatu - SP, from April 1st to April 30th, 2024, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Noeme de Sousa. Additionally, the internship included work at the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases within the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco, Campus Recife - PE, from May 6th to June 19th, 2024, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Leucio Câmara Alves. In the pathology department, cytological examinations, anatomoclinical necropsies, and forensic necropsies were performed. At the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases, services were provided in the canine leishmaniasis outpatient clinic, including routine tests such as the Knott, Flotac, and Mini Flotac techniques. During the internship period, an article titled ‘Overview of Crimes Against Dogs and Cats and Investigation of Leishmaniasis and Scabies in Animals Under the Care of Protectors in the Municipality of Ipojuca - PE was prepared. Data were collected from the 42nd and 43rd Police Stations in Ipojuca, and visits were made to animal protectors, with evaluation forms completed for dogs, cats, and scabies cases. Six cases from the 42nd police station and six from the 43rd were analyzed. Among the animals evaluated from the protectors, one dog tested positive for Leishmania infantum chagasi amastigotes, another dog had Demodex sp., and a cat tested positive for Notoedres cati. Additionally, in eight cats undergoing trichogram analysis, Lynxacarus radovskyi was found in 100% of cases. Regarding the animals’ history, 54.28% were rescued from abusive conditions. Thus, considering that the Leishmaniasis-positive dog was rescued from abandonment, we can infer, albeit tentatively, the significant connection between animal cruelty and its potential impact on public health.

The cases of neoplasms in pets show a significant growth compared to decades ago, being considered as one of the main causes, when malignant, of death or euthanasia among canines and felines. The use of existing diagnostic resources favors obtaining early results, positively impacting the survival of affected animals. Some neoplasms show a very marked degree of undifferentiation or anaplasia, requiring the adoption of immunohistochemistry (IHC) for diagnostic conclusion. The objective, with this case report, was to present a clinical case of neoplasm in the region of the interdigits of the left pelvic limb in a canine of the Shetland Shepherd breed, in which immunohistochemistry was necessary for diagnostic confirmation. The patient underwent surgical resection with amputation of the digit involved to reduce the chances of recurrence. IHC was requested for diagnostic confirmation after carrying out cytology and histopathology tests, which suggested malignant mesenchymal neoplasia and histiocytic sarcoma, respectively. The markers expressed by the cells ruled out the diagnostic conclusion of the histopathological examination. Therefore, it is concluded that immunohistochemistry is of great importance to confirm the type of neoplasia involved, preventing chemotherapy protocols from being erroneously adopted due to mistaken histopathological reports.

The mandatory supervised internship, last course of the Veterinary Medicine program, demonstrates to be a fundamental moment in a students life, since it brings a practical background in the desired field of work. In this regard, a whole professional practice is experienced, in order to prepare the newcomer into the labor market. Therefore, the report describes the activities performed in the veterinary clinical pathlogy field, in the 4 Patas Veterinary Hospital, under the supervision of the veterinarian Camila Coutinho; and in the Harmonia Veterinary Hospital under the supervision of the veterinarian Allison Macêdo. The total workload was 420 hours, divided into 210 hours per clinic, from August 28th till December 9th, 2020. The addressed data was obtained via laboratory test count. In addition, it is important to point out that a scientific paper was developed from data collection during the internship in the Harmonia Veterinary Hospital, in which blood tests reports from dogs with viral cytoplasmic inclusion bodies (Lentz bodies), pathognomonic to Canine Distemper, were analyzed and compared to the described literature, highlighting the importance of the total blood count, as well as the need of other laboratory tests of confirmatory nature. Thusly, it is concluded that, the mandatory supervised internship was essential in the learning of professional routine, establishing work relationships, exposure to different settings, understanding of existing dynamics in each setting and also, technical enhancement of theoretical-practical knowledge acquired during undergraduate studies.
