The Base of Ornamental Pisculture and Marine Research – POPMar, is a research center created in 1997 by the Instituto Oceanário de Pernambuco - IOPE in partnership with the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco – UFRPE, on the island of Itamaracá - Pernambuco. With the objective of initially conducting practical classes during the academic semesters for the Fisheries Engineering course, then contemplating other undergraduate courses at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco UFRPE / SEDE, on topics related to the curriculum, such as: ornamental fish pisciculture, production of live food and marine biodiversity. From the year 2011, the Poecilia Project began to be carried out during the university recess, which is an extension project created for students from the Serra Talhada Academic Unit - UAST / UFRPE of the Fisheries Engineering courses, Biological Sciences and Zootechnics, could gain experiences through practical classes on cultivation in an ornamental fish culture, together with swimming lessons and notions of free and autonomous diving. Conduct monitoring assisting new students participating in the Project; make technical visits to other ornamental fish farms and shrimp ponds in order to arouse students' interest in these areas of professional activity. Get to know other ecosystems, such as the mangrove, through trips on the Jaguaribe River; and the sandstone reefs through free dives in the natural pools (Ilha de Itamaracá); and visit cultural and ecological places like the Ricardo Brennand Institute, the Dois Irmãos State Park (zoo), the Recife Botanical Garden, the Santa Cruz de Itamaracá Fort and the historic city of Vila Velha. So that at the end of each project, participants return to their activities with more theoretical knowledge and with more in-depth practical experiences, increasing their interest in their courses and helping to reduce the dropout rate of undergraduate students.
