As espécies apresentaram respostas distintas. A relação MSPA/MSR indicou equilíbrio hídrico.
The growing awareness of environmental conservation has increased the demand for native forest seedlings, highlighting the need for studies focused on producing high-quality seedlings, which are essential for restoration, reforestation, and urban afforestation programs. Among the factors influencing seedling production, substrate composition and container size stand out due to their direct effects on seedling growth and quality. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the growth and quality of seedlings of Handroanthus impetiginosus (Mart. ex DC.) Mattos and Tabebuia aurea (Silva Manso) Benth. & Hook.f. ex S. Moore produced under different substrates and container sizes at Parque Estadual de Dois Irmãos (PEDI), Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design using a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement, consisting of four substrates (S1: 100% organic compost; S2: organic compost + sand (3:1); S3: 100% reservoir plant residue; and S4: reservoir plant residue + sand (3:1)) and two container sizes, totaling eight treatments with six replications. Seedlings were grown under full sunlight for 100 days. Thirty days after seedling emergence, plant height (H), stem diameter (SD), number of leaves (NL), emergence percentage (EP), mean emergence time (MET), and emergence speed index (ESI) were evaluated. At the end of the experiment, H, SD, NL, chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll contents, root dry mass (RDM), shoot dry mass (SDM), total dry mass (TDM), the SDM/RDM and H/SD ratios, and the Dickson Quality Index (DQI) were determined. The two species exhibited distinct responses to the treatments. For H. impetiginosus, the greatest plant height was observed in S3, whereas S2 resulted in the lowest values. The highest number of leaves was recorded in S1. Stem diameter was affected only by container size, with greater values obtained in the 280 cm³ container, although still below the recommended standard. The highest total chlorophyll content was observed in seedlings grown in the larger container and in substrate S4. Shoot dry mass and total dry mass showed a significant interaction between substrate and container size, with the highest values obtained in S4 using the 280 cm³ container. No significant differences were observed for the H/SD ratio, root dry mass, or Dickson Quality Index. For T. aurea, significant differences were found for plant height (highest in S1 and lowest in S4), stem diameter (greater in 280 cm³ containers, except for S4), shoot dry mass (highest in S1 using the larger container), and total dry mass (highest in S1 and lowest in S3). The SDM/RDM ratio indicated balanced biomass allocation between shoots and roots. The interaction between substrate and container size demonstrated that larger containers promoted greater root development and biomass accumulation. No significant differences were found for number of leaves, chlorophyll content, root dry mass, or Dickson Quality Index. Overall, larger containers promoted better seedling growth and quality. Reservoir plant residue proved to be a viable alternative substrate; however, its effectiveness varied between species, indicating the need for further studies to expand its application in native forest seedling production.
