The study seeks to verify and justify the relevance of the theme in representing the existential dualities and dilemmas of the human being. Through the novel by Portuguese au The present work approaches the theme of the double in literature from the representation of contemporary subjects and the dialogue between literature and society. The study seeks to verify and justify the relevance of the theme in representing the existential dualities and dilemmas of the human being. Through the novel by Portuguese author José Saramago published in 2002, the work discusses the question of identity in the globalized world. Centered on the meeting of two perfectly identical men, Saramago's novel attributes longevity to the theme of the double and puts it into discussion with regard to how representative the theme of the double is as a social critic. Throughout the work we will analyze theoretical questions of the double, the plot of the novel and soon after its resonances in the social context. Theoretically supported by Sturat Hall (2005) the work seeks to present the reflexes of a globalized, automated society, of large metropolises and the consequences on contemporary subjects, fragmentation, existential dilemmas, identity crisis, consequently duplicity
