Using processes based only on 2D technology, however, slows down the application of the best modeling and data management methods in this industry, often generating disagreement between agents involved in the project. Therefore, this study evaluates, through bibliographic review, the evolution of BIM’s methodology and the impacts resulting from its application in the planning and management of works. Data related to its development over the years, intrinsic characteristics, norms and legislation in force, as well as its influence on trends in the construction sector, were highlighted. For the literature analysis, books, articles and dissertations on the theme, produced between the years 2005 and 2020, were chosen, taking the number of citations as the selection criterion. It was observed that the main consequences regarding the application of BIM are: increase of workloads and financial contributions during implementation, reduction of rework and decrease in the project’s overall costs. The regular creation of rules and decrees on BIM demonstrates the existence of a trend of incentives for its adoption, aiming to add more quality to processes and, consequently, products.
