The present study addressed the volunteer work at the Hospital de Cancer de Pernambuco (HCP) seeking to understand the importance of volunteering for the development of services and treatments offered by the Hospital. Here, we define voluntary work under Law 9.608 / 1998 as an unpaid activity, provided by an individual to a public entity of any kind, or to a nonprofit private institution that has civic, cultural, educational, scientific purposes. , recreational or social work, including mutuality. Thus, the volunteer acts in a free, disinterested and responsible manner, committing himself, according to his abilities and in his free time, to develop volunteer actions. In the specific case of the Hospital de Cancer de Pernambuco, volunteering works in various sectors of the hospital, especially in welcoming patients. The research proposed here sought, as in a case study, to know the impressions and opinions of patients, their families, volunteers and hospital staff about the importance of volunteer work and their contribution to the services offered by HCP. Therefore, the instruments used for data collection were semi-structured interviews and observation. Among the findings, we can highlight that the work of volunteers in HCP is considered of fundamental importance for the full development of services and treatments offered to patients, family members and the general public.
