Artisanal fishing is manifested by the diversity and complexity of subjects, environments, vessels, techniques, fishing gear and communities' way of life. Technical assistance services for small-scale fishing were constructed based on a fishing extension that was / is similar to the rural extension of Brazil, driven by methodological interventions outlined by discontinuous public policies. The objective of this work was to reflect on the technical assistance and fishing extension for artisanal fishing in the sertão of the State of Pernambuco. Eight interviews were conducted with the help of a semistructured script and open questions with managers and leaders of artisanal fishing in the State of Pernambuco. The lack of sensitivity to artisanal fishing is evident among a large number of professionals working with ATER, much fruit of the construction of knowledge within universities, which end up directing these future professionals to the segment that the market indicates, in this case, the aquaculture, and / or the institutional planning of ATER institutions, which end up valuing the segment that gives the state more economic return. The fact is that in the context of fishing extension, the technical follow-up of artisanal fishermen and fishermen is secondary, either in the valuation of aquaculture or in the ambit of social organization.
