The Military Police of the State of Pernambuco (PMPE) emerged in the context of the unrest in the province of Pernambuco, marked by the Confederation of the Equator in 1824. This event was crucial for the establishment of a police force aimed at maintaining order and protecting the interests of Emperor D. Pedro I. Over time, the police institution has reinvented and adapted to the social and moral values of each era, operating in various ways from its inception to the present day. Until the end of the Military Dictatorship (1964-1985), police actions were often associated with a show of force, frequently related to the repression of the populace. With the return to democracy and the adoption of the democratic rule of law, police services and the military institution itself had to reformulate to meet the demands and proposals of the Citizen Constitution of 1988, which remains in effect today. Since then, the PMPE has strived to promote internal changes and improve its external performance in the defense and assurance of human dignity. However, there is still a long way to go, and this article is dedicated to exploring the history of the PMPE and analyzing the mechanisms used by the institution to ensure and adhere to the legal principles related to Human Rights.
