Esse evento foi fundamental para a criação de um corpo policial destinado a assegurar a ordem e os interesses do imperador D. Pedro I. Ao longo do tempo, a instituição policial se reinventou e se adaptou aos valores sociais e morais de cada época, atuando de maneiras distintas desde sua criação até os dias atuais. Até o fim da Ditadura Militar (1964-1985), a atuação policial estava frequentemente associada à ostensividade, muitas vezes relacionada com a repressão popular. Com a abertura política e a adoção do regime democrático de direito, o serviço policial e a própria instituição militar precisaram se reformular para atender às demandas e às propostas da Constituição Cidadã de 1988, em vigor até hoje. Desde então, a PMPE tem se esforçado para promover mudanças internas e melhorar sua atuação externa em prol da defesa e garantia da dignidade da pessoa humana. No entanto, ainda há um longo caminho a percorrer, e este artigo se dedica a explorar a história da PMPE e a analisar os mecanismos utilizados pela instituição para garantir e obedecer aos preceitos jurídicos relacionados aos Direitos Humanos.The Military Police of the State of Pernambuco (PMPE) emerged in the context of the unrest in the province of Pernambuco, marked by the Confederation of the Equator in 1824. This event was crucial for the establishment of a police force aimed at maintaining order and protecting the interests of Emperor D. Pedro I. Over time, the police institution has reinvented and adapted to the social and moral values of each era, operating in various ways from its inception to the present day. Until the end of the Military Dictatorship (1964-1985), police actions were often associated with a show of force, frequently related to the repression of the populace. With the return to democracy and the adoption of the democratic rule of law, police services and the military institution itself had to reformulate to meet the demands and proposals of the Citizen Constitution of 1988, which remains in effect today. Since then, the PMPE has strived to promote internal changes and improve its external performance in the defense and assurance of human dignity.
