The present study aimed to investigate and classify the dietary components ofCallinectes marginatus on Itamaracá Island, Pernambuco, Brazil, after the oil spill thatoccurred on the Brazilian coast in 2019, seeking to identify the pattern of feedingbehavior. The specimens analyzed were collected during the daytime period from July2020 to May 2021, using a 20-meter-long, 1.5-meter-high, 5-millimeter mesh openingtrawl net at three points: Jaguaribe beach, representing the surf zone; mouth of theJaguaribe River; in the innermost region of the river, corresponding to the estuarineregion. After collection, the material was sent to the Benthos Laboratory ofUFRPE/UAST for analysis. The crabs were identified, measured, and sexed.Subsequently, the stomachs were removed, weighed, and the degree of repletion wasassessed. To analyze the contribution of each food item, the Point Method, Frequencyof Occurrence, volume and Food Index were applied, in addition to verifying the habitthrough the feeding strategy. The study identified eight food items, represented bymollusks, crustaceans, MOA (animal organic matter), MOV, calcareous algae, sediment, fish and foraminifera. The difference in the diet of males and femalesshowed that there were only small changes in the proportions of the items consumed. However, the mollusk item continued to be the most representative item for both sexes. The results indicate that C. marginatus has a generalist diet, with a strong preferencefor mollusks and crustaceans. The presence of oil was not identified in its structures orother internal organs, showing that there was no change in the natural diet of thespecies, even after the oil incident. This study is relevant for understanding the feedingecology of C. marginatus, in addition to providing valuable information for theconservation of these crabs.
